So, last night was Halloween. I’m not particularly into Halloween, but I really enjoyed this one. I was invited to a party by one of my physics friends, who had basically invited everybody she knew. A few of my friends had been discussing costumes as far as a month in advance, but I had given little thought to it, until late Thursday night, as I lay in bed, and thought about what I could possibly wear.
I’m a bit cheap; I wasn’t particularly keen to spend much money, and I really wanted something I could just throw together from what I already had. Last year, I’d gone as the Australian, complete with thongs (not flipflops, damnit!), stubbies, Australian t-shirt, koala, and woopee hat. And damnit, it was cold last year! This year, I decided that I wanted to take the opportunity to wear my tails, which I haven’t had the opportunity to wear yet, and so my costume formed around my set of tails. (That’s the suit-with-tails variety).
So, I was going to be the butler, Jeeves. Since it was Halloween, he had to be dead, and so that would require some makeup. Otherwise, it was the shiny black shoes, black socks, black trousers, formal white shirt (complete with cufflinks), black bowtie, and tails. I went shopping for some makeup (a white foundation, a black cream to make things a bit greyer and also to get the eyes right, and some black eyeliner), and also found a pair of white gloves which fit the character nicely. It took me a long time to tease my hair into the shape I wanted it to be in, and I ended up cheating and using a fair bit of gel. The white base went on pretty thick, and then I tried out this eyeliner thing. I don’t know how people put it on themselves! I had a lot of difficult getting it the way I wanted it. After the eyeliner was on correctly though, the black went on pretty easily, and I was rather pleased with the overall effect.
I rather enjoyed staying in character for most of the night; not many people were in character however. It was a lot of fun to walk sedately and introduce myself with my head tipped at a rather odd angle, going crosseyed, and speaking in a particularly monotonic voice (for those of you familiar with Blandisse, think the way that she speaks ;)). I was easily the best dressed male at the party; but I think my friend Kendra outdid me for best costume, just personally. I’m amazed she managed to stay in her, what, 4 inch heels? for as long as she did! It was a bit strange to talk to her eye to eye!
Anyway, eventually my eyes went rather bloodshot from stuff melting in the heat and dripping into them, which kind of just added to the effect, but it started to sting after a while, so I eventually went home. It took me a fair while to get the makeup off my face, but I did a pretty thorough job. Alas though, I still woke up with panda eyes this morning. That was a little unexpected!
I took a photo with my webcam before I took off all the makeup, and I’ve put it below. Some of my friends at the party got better photos; I’ll put some of them up when I get hold of them.
Have a great weekend all!
